Some universities may require Diploma holders to undertake a top up course to the level of a degree before applicants are considered for admissions into Masters and Doctorate degree programs on scholarships. Some universities may admit diploma holders on condition that the Diploma holder would undertake a top up course and can afford the full cost of their education if admitted.
The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a multiple-choice, section adaptive computer-based, standardized test that may be required for admission to graduate programs and graduate business programs. In addition, many law schools in the United States may accept a GRE score for admission.
A new shorter GRE has been administered in Ghana and globally since September 2023. The current GRE is made up of three sections: Analytical Writing (One section), Verbal Reasoning (Two sections), and Quantitative Reasoning (Two sections). The Analytical Writing section will always be first. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections may appear in any order after the Analytical Writing section. The duration for the GRE is about 1 hour and 58 minutes.
The GRE Analytical Writing Section is made up of one essay question. Test takers have 30minutes to type a response to one (1) Analysis of an Issue Essay. Trained GRE readers will evaluate your response for its overall quality based on how well you respond to the specific task instructions, consider the complexities of the issue, support your ideas with relevant reasons and/or examples, control the elements of standard written English, organize, develop, and express your ideas. The Analytical Writing is scored from 0 to 6, in half-point increments.
The GRE Verbal Reasoning Section is a two-stage adaptive test design with two separately timed sections with a total of 27 questions to be answered in 41 minutes. The first verbal reasoning section has 12 questions to be answered in 18 minutes and the second verbal reasoning section has 15 questions to be answered in 23 minutes. The Verbal Reasoning measure contains three types of questions: Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence. The Verbal Reasoning measure of the GRE General Test assesses your ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences, and recognize relationships among words and concepts. The GRE Verbal Reasoning is scored on a scale from 130 to 170.
The GRE Quantitative Reasoning Section is also a two-stage adaptive test design with two separately timed sections with a total of 27 questions to be answered in 47 minutes. The first quantitative reasoning section has 12 questions to be answered in 21 minutes and the second quantitative reasoning section has 15 questions to be answered in 26 minutes. The Quantitative Reasoning measure has four types of questions: Quantitative Comparison Questions, Multiple-choice Questions — Select One Answer Choice, Multiple-choice Questions — Select One or More Answer Choices, and Numeric Entry Questions. The Quantitative Reasoning measure of the GRE General Test assesses your basic mathematical skills, your understanding of elementary mathematical concepts, and your ability to reason quantitatively and to model and solve problems with quantitative methods. The GRE Quantitative Reasoning is scored on a scale from 130 to 170.
The GRE provides graduate school programs with quantifiable way to compare you with other applicants. While it can be difficult to compare applicants’ personal statements, letters of recommendation, and GPAs, it is easier for programs to compare objective GRE scores. During the admissions process, admissions committees will juxtapose your GRE scores with those of other applicants (or with those of previously admitted applicants). They will also likely use current GRE percentiles to see what percentage of test takers you scored higher (and lower) than.
